Music Theory

moondaughter6:

Leaps by a fifth
and perfect parallel octaves;
calculated dissonances
and harmonies executed through
following the rules.
Notes placed on staves,
drawn with the utmost care;
stems double checked for
correct direction and length.
Proceed to the piano
to have mechanics repeated.
All these notes never seemed so
monotonous.
Three years of learning theory,
without ever truly writing music.

we need to gather the tribes around improv based, student-centered tuition. I believe in a better way.

Don’t ignore your dreams; don’t work too much; say what you think; cultivate friendships; be happy.

I would like to avoid making these mistakes. But how do you avoid mistakes you make by default? Ideally you transform your life so it has other defaults. But it may not be possible to do that completely. As long as these mistakes happen by default, you probably have to be reminded not to make them. So I inverted the 5 regrets, yielding a list of 5 commands

Don’t ignore your dreams; don’t work too much; say what you think; cultivate friendships; be happy.

which I then put at the top of the file I use as a todo list.

About an article on the regrets of the dying…

“I’m not Here” and Bob Dylan a “review” of them.

I watched parts of “I’m Not Here”

I can’t write a review per se - just some uncensored thoughts I have about Dylan and the movie.

It was good to get a sense of how much a betrayal Dylan’s audience felt when he went electric.

The movie was all over the place and generally a failure.

Dylan is a FASHION VICTIM.

I didn’t feel any empathy for his character when he was “exposed” as a bourgeoise self-repudiating jewish “pretender” by a critic in the movie.

Cate Blanchett is annoying and overrated - the only convincing work I’ve ever liked of hers is in the movie Coffee and Cigarettes where she plays a double role. She seems so staged.

Its interesting when she says something like “I don’t believe in being a protest singer because that sets you up as detached from the violence of the world - and I don’t want to be detached.” That’s really interesting.

Heath Ledger is also overrated. He seems just like some average handsome guy who the world tolerated should be a renown actor - I don’t get it.

Christian Bale was really good. And the Dylan songs he sings are really great - Dylan’s social realism protest songs are the best.

“Maggie’s farm” is an awful song.

I got bored and turned it off by the time Richard Gere started farting about.

Dylan SOLD OUT. Man - part of me wants to believe he just sold out - but another part of me understands he probably had very little choice - he probably believed he was a pretender and didn’t have the right to play the real-deal role to the end. But you had the right man - anyone who tells the story true has the right.

The world will fucking grind you down - but you write a verse in the book anyway. Write that verse.

I’m stressed out and have nothing useful to offer it seems. The tone of cultural debates is so mercenary and heartless that its very hard for me to engage with them. Everyone wants to be a tough guy.

“Fair Game” is a movie with Naomi Watts and Sean Penn. It surveys a lot of the trumped up charges used to justify the Iraq war. More light needs to shine on the methods used to justify war and the money trails supporting it.

Sing the forms you are comparing - account for the change in each voice of the chord change by singing it and naming the difference. There is no other Royal Road - Sing and Play IS the Royal Road.

I drew this tonight.
Best Actress for Kramer vs Kramer. Who knows, she may go on to do some other stuff.

                    Spring

Winter <———-(—O==  ) Summer

                      Fall

That is a guitar!

Fall <-> Spring - Vertical low pitch - to high pitch - 6 positions

Winter <-> Summer - Horizontal low pitch to High Pitch. - 13 positions (up to 12th fret - 1 more per fret )

Inspired after listening to a Pat Martino interview.

Why is C considered the first key?

Why is C considered the first key? I think it has to do with the singing voice. It became middle c in Monk Guido’s UtReMi system. It occupies an important central position with Gamma-UT. It is related to the WWHWWWH archetype. The academic, mathematical bent of modernity has obscured the true function…

In Indian music the singer’s voice dictates Sa (Do) more than the standard being set around the pitch C. But I do think the pitch C holds some special position of centrality relative to the singing voice. I need to research that. I need to find the right questions to ask about this.

m.: so if i'm opposed to new atheism

worldcoup:

maybe, just maybe, I’m not opposed to rationality, secularism, common sense, morality, and even atheism, like you think I am.

Maybe I’m just allergic to your universalizing, bigoted, white supremacist, culture erasing bullshit.

New atheism isn’t the only way to do rationality and common…

Important points need to be said - even in the wake of Hitchen’s memorials. The truth will out, aye. No one is right just because their enemies are wrong.

Marilyn Monroe photographed by Tom Kelley in 1949
“Reflecting on the Marilyn Monroe nudes, Kelley remembers that he posed the out-of-work actress on a bolt of bright red velvet cloth. She was paid $50.00 for her modeling, telling Kelley that she would use the money to make an installment on her car. In retrospect, Kelley is proud of the fact that no matter how one turned the photograph, its composition was impeccably symmetrical. The Photograph, turned calendar, brought him $900.00 from a printer who sold it in quantity for millions. It also brought Kelley untold fame.Strangely, in a sense, Kelley nudes of Marilyn were to prove to be the catalyst in the sexual revolution occurring some five years after he made the photographs. Up until that time, the nude female form was relegated to a few sleezy pre-Playboy-type girlie books if not out- and-out hardcore pornography. To be sure, one distinguished publication did print nudes; however, the National Geographic’s genre of undraped, unsightly epidermis and/or dangling mammary glands could hardly be classified with a contemporary Playboy centerfold. But Kelley and Marilyn made the naked body a thing beautiful to behold. No longer was a nude picture of a beautiful woman an object to be viewed from the rear of the barn or the secrecy of one’s bedroom. Marilyn readily admitted that it was she who had posed for Kelley’s camera when confronted by United Press Hollywood correspondent Aleene Mosby. And for years thereafter, she would autograph copies of the calendar for servicemen with consummate pride.”
